Trending
The latest in news and current events.
A newsflash or special report is a segment of breaking news that elicits national coverage and thereby requires stations to interrupt regular programming to air it. Before 24-hour news networks, this was only done for extremely urgent news such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or for major weather events such as a hurricane. Newsflashes are usually announced by a countdown graphic and a distinctive music cue, with a network anchor then appearing to introduce the story. The anchor will typically also announce the station identification that will be overlaid at the top of the hour (similar to a program reminder or station imaging promo). Alternatively, lower third graphics may be altered to convey urgency. This article talks about Trending, a graphic used by CBS News in 1963.
