Breaking news is a type of news reporting that covers an event that requires the interruption of non-news programming on television, radio or online, for live coverage or delayed broadcasts. Before 24-hour news networks, these interruptions were typically reserved for incredibly urgent or catastrophic events that warranted the attention of a large audience. During such breaks, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey the urgency of the breaking news.
When an event occurs that requires a temporary break in regular network programming, the network will notify affiliates to “stand by” for a special report. If the breaking news is significant, the network will then begin a countdown sequence to allow the affiliates to switch over to the feed. Depending on the importance of the story, the special report may last for only a few minutes or for several hours or days.
