One of the biggest questions about streaming news is whether it will lead to siloing of news coverage. Like cable, it is possible that the multiplicity of choices will feed polarization. However, the networks also have high hopes for streaming.
The major news networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the business. Streaming enables them to serve their audience’s needs by archiving content and sending it to viewers where they want it. This allows them to deliver news in real time. Moreover, it makes building a library of news affordable.
Streaming has proven to be effective in attracting a diverse and wide-ranging audience. Compared to broadcast news, it offers a streamlined experience, enabling viewers to customize their viewing experience. In addition to traditional nightly news programs, these major streaming networks also offer documentaries, reruns, and other programming.
Several local TV stations have already begun to nichify their coverage. For example, a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh piped its coverage to streamers. As the news broke, the network talent introduced the story and then paused to allow other affiliates to join the feed.
Networks have also begun incorporating news analysis into their programming. These new features may include news release information and an internal alert service for reporters.
News reports may be as short as a few minutes or as long as a day. If a story is breaking, a reporter will be at the scene to report the event. After reporting the story, a reporter will share information with the station master control.
