Breaking news is an announcement of an urgent and significant event, usually one that warrants a disruption of non-news programming (or occasionally a scheduled newscast) to provide live coverage. Often, a network will interrupt its national feed and start a countdown sequence for its affiliates to switch to the breaking news story. This is often accompanied by a newsflash graphic and an altered music cue. This type of coverage is common with 24-hour news channels and formerly was reserved for extremely important events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted many stations to cut in.
