When an event occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts), networks typically begin with a countdown sequence that allows their affiliates to switch to the network feed and a special opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. The network then begins to report on the breaking event in-studio or remotely via satellite, phone, broadband or other means. This type of report is commonly known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report”, and may also include lower third graphics that emphasize the urgency of the story. In the days before 24-hour news networks, this type of break was usually reserved for national events with nationwide impact, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
