Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio broadcast in which urgent, unscheduled news events are reported. Typically, it involves the interruption of non-news programming or the pause of a national network newscast (or local newscast in the case of an affiliate), to allow for the breaking report to be displayed. The breaking news is often accompanied by a special graphic and a distinctive music cue. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, these breaks were reserved for highly urgent stories, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programs.
