Breaking news is an event that requires a television, radio or internet broadcaster to interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, pause their live feed) to cover an immediate and urgent story. The interruption is usually indicated by a countdown sequence and a graphic or special opening music cue, and may be referred to as a “Newsflash”, “Special Report” or an alert crawl.
