There’s a new way to discover trends on Facebook. It’s called Trending Topics. Facebook identifies trending topics through an algorithm that monitors mentions of a specific topic. The algorithm looks for a high volume and a sharp increase in mentions. It also uses an external RSS website crawler to detect breaking news events. The list of websites included in the algorithm can be found here. The algorithm then confirms whether the topic is tied to a current news event.
There are also a number of recent developments in emergency medicine. For example, AAEM is establishing new regional chapters in Virginia and Maryland. It has also partnered with the American Medical Association and the American Board of Emergency Medicine. AAEM has also established an EM Pain and Procedural Committee. This new committee was created in response to the opioid crisis.
