Streaming news has been around for a while. It’s no longer just a gimmick. It’s actually quite a profitable business. The major networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations.

The major networks have a number of strategies to deliver timely and ad-free news. They use their streaming platforms to archive content, create reruns, and offer news analysis. They also have aggressive local streaming news strategies.

They have a plethora of options to choose from, including CBS News, Fox, and NBC. Each of these networks has a streaming app. In the case of Fox, they have attracted 1.5 million subscribers for its Fox Nation app.

Among the free news streamers, some are mimicking cable’s approach. They want viewers to cut their cable subscriptions and instead subscribe to their streaming services. The companies would like to get a slice of the $3 billion in profits. The idea is to provide viewers with cable-like quality news. The companies are using the same marketing techniques cable used to sell cable.

The streaming game isn’t without its challenges. Some consumers are averse to paying for low-quality, high-cost products. For instance, they might be reluctant to watch a documentary about an obscure event if the newscast doesn’t mention the event. Others might simply be content to switch channels.

While streaming is likely to change political news coverage, it may not have the effect that cable did. It’s easy to imagine a scenario where a multiplicity of new choices feeds the audience’s polarization.
