In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is an urgent event that requires the interruption of non-news programming for live coverage. It is sometimes called a newsflash, special report or “breaking news alert”. The term originated when major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy required nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programs. This type of breaking news is now common in 24-hour news networks that have anchors on-site to react to events as they happen. Prior to the advent of these networks, station affiliations would interrupt regularly scheduled programs with cut-ins or alert crawls in response to severe weather.
