In television and radio broadcasting, a “breaking news event” is an urgent piece of information that warrants the interruption of regular programming to provide live coverage or an alert crawl on-screen. It used to be common for national network affiliates to interrupt non-news programming, such as a soap opera or sitcom episode, with a newsflash or special report if the breaking story was particularly serious. Breaking news events can be brief or continue for several hours or even days, requiring sustained interruptions of regular commercial advertising. Often, lower thirds and other graphics are altered for breaking news reports.
