In television and radio news, breaking news is a special report or an interrupt to regularly scheduled non-news programming for urgent or important news events. Such reports may require a network to alert its affiliates and tell them to “stand by.” Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was typically reserved for news events that elicited nationwide coverage and required multiple stations to interrupt their regular programming. When an event warrants such reporting, a countdown graphic is usually displayed over the top of the hour overlaid with a distinctive music cue and a news anchor.
