Breaking news is a report on an event that has just occurred, or is about to occur. It is usually presented by a network-affiliated television station, interrupting non-news programming or, if the event is extremely urgent and requires nationwide coverage, even regular newscasts. Such reports are sometimes referred to as Newsflash or Special Report (or, less formally, simply Breaking News or News) and may be accompanied by a distinctively-sounding music cue. They may also be interrupted by a special graphic or lower third, indicating that the program has been paused for this breaking news item. This is more common for national or international events, rather than local news.
