Breaking news is live coverage of an ongoing, urgent news story that warrants the interruption of regular programming. The breaking news report is usually accompanied by a special graphics opening, and sometimes includes a music cue, indicating that the program will be interrupted. The broadcaster then alerts its network affiliates that they are interrupting regular non-news programs, or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, may pause their own programming and rely on their feed to begin their breaking news report. The breaking news report may also be overlaid with station ID or lower thirds.
