Breaking news is a live or pre-recorded report on a breaking news event, such as a terrorist attack, political upheaval, or natural disaster. Depending on the urgency of the story, it may require an immediate interruption in regular programming, or may simply be reported through a special graphic overlaid on top of existing broadcast graphics. This is most commonly seen on national network television, although some 24-hour cable news networks also use this technique. Until the advent of television and radio 24-hour news channels, news events that warranted breaking news coverage required many stations to suspend regular programming, using cut-ins or alert crawls.
