In North America, the term “breaking news” is usually used to refer to current events that warrant an interruption of normal programming, such as severe weather, or a national or international emergency. Before the existence of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were only given for extremely urgent news, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted local television and radio stations nationwide to interrupt their regular programming to provide live coverage and analysis of the event. Breaking news reports are typically introduced through a countdown sequence followed by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. During breaking news coverage, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey the severity of an event.
