Breaking News – A national network newscast may pause after a breaking story to allow other affiliates to join the feed. While the breaking news anchor introduces the story, the lower thirds may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Similarly, local television stations may alter the words “breaking news” and “special report” to evoke an emotion of urgency. Depending on the type of breaking news, the anchor may also read a message reminding viewers to check their local cable news channels.
The timing of breaking news varies across platforms. It may disrupt newly-produced or highly-rated programming. For example, a missile strike in April 2017 interrupted ABC’s Scandal episode. However, breaking news during prime time can interrupt even highly rated programming. The network may be notified of future interruptions, and local affiliates can prepare for the interruptions by rolling out special topical graphics. If a national event breaks, local stations can break away from the network feed, or join on an “extended edition” if they choose.
