Breaking News is a special news report, often in the form of a ticker or “newsflash”, that interrupts current non-news programming to provide information about an event that is unfolding immediately. Such events may require the national news feed of a television or radio station to be interrupted, and the network will usually inform its affiliates that they will be doing so. If the breaking news event is so important that it warrants a complete interruption of regular broadcasts, this will be announced with an introductory graphic and a distinctive music cue. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were primarily reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, that required nationwide coverage and forced stations to halt regular programming.
