Current News is a term used in broadcast television for coverage of a breaking news event. Depending on the nature of the story, this may be an in-depth report or brief highlights from an event, often involving a live anchor.

Breaking news usually warrants a pre-emption of a current non-news program (either network or syndicated, if local). The interruption typically involves a countdown and an opening graphic, as well as information disseminated from an internal alert service utilized by a station’s master control.

Unlike most news coverage, it is not unusual for a breaking news story to last only a few minutes, although a full news cycle incorporating analysis and graphics might be required to cover an event involving extensive damage or multiple fatalities. Even so, it is rare for a breaking news story to extend beyond a few hours, as was the case in the aftermath of the 1963 assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy, or the September 11 attacks in 2001.

The best and most comprehensive breaking news coverage is usually limited to the national newscast of a major network. Local stations, on the other hand, might be given the opportunity to take over for an extended edition if a large event is taking place in their area and if they have a local reporter in the area who can provide more in-depth coverage.

Besides the big picture, the breaking news of the day is commonly accompanied by smaller details that might be deemed too trivial to mention elsewhere. For instance, during the Sago Mine disaster in 2009, a special report about the mine itself was the most important part of an otherwise mediocre story.
