Current News talks about Trending:

Breaking news is a term for a news event that is so serious that it warrants an interruption of ongoing, non-news programming or, at the very least, interrupts a live newscast on a regular schedule. When this happens, a network will alert all its affiliates to the breaking news, and often has a countdown sequence for them to join the feed once it is available. At the end of the countdown, a news anchor will welcome viewers to the special report and introduce the story that is at hand. The breaking news report can last for only a few minutes or may continue for several hours or days. A number of networks also now use a special ticker during regular programming to highlight breaking stories that require an immediate reaction. This eliminates the need for a newsflash or cut-in and can allow stations to air more frequent, longer segments on a given topic.
