When a breaking news story occurs, stations interrupt regular programming to provide coverage. This is especially common for events that require immediate attention such as severe weather or an ongoing terrorist attack. The breaking news may be provided by the network itself or, in the case of a national event, by all affiliated stations simultaneously. A news anchor and/or an announcer usually introduces the story, and lower thirds and station imaging promos may be modified to convey a sense of urgency. Alternatively, news networks can use special tickers on their digital or satellite feeds to highlight specific breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming.
