Streaming has changed the landscape of political and news coverage. With low barriers to entry, new players are encouraged to enter the business. The result is an increased amount of choice, which feeds polarization.
Major news networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. These networks repurposed programming from cable and broadcast. They schedule regular nightly news programs, reruns, documentaries, and news analysis. They also schedule local news coverage. In the future, streaming could allow news to arrive on viewer demand.
Streaming news has also proved effective at attracting niche audiences. For example, the NBC News Now streaming app has 31 million hours of content a month.
