Breaking news is a television or radio event that warrants an interruption in current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts), and the use of special graphics and music. This is usually followed by an anchor who welcomes viewers to the breaking news and introduces the story at hand. Previously, breaking news was usually limited to events that required nationwide coverage and a large number of stations to interrupt regular programming to air special reports; however, in recent years, networks have used “Newsflash” or “Special report” tickers during regularly scheduled programming for certain stories, lessening the need for program interruptions.
