Breaking news is a television and radio event that elicits national coverage that requires the interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). Usually this occurs by a network alert to its affiliates telling them to “stand by” and then a countdown from the start of an overlaid breaking news graphic or special lower thirds with a distinctive music cue. Then the station or network anchor introduces the breaking story, often via a live feed.
