During prime time, a news program may be interrupted by breaking news. When the story has ended, the network may resume the previous program. If the news is important, the station may cut to the video of the event.
“Breaking news” is also commonly used to describe “special report” coverage. A breaking news report may last for several minutes or for an hour or more. The story is introduced by a news anchor. The anchor may use music or other visual elements to highlight the importance of the event.
During prime time, a network may interrupt the newscast to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. Local stations may also receive a cue from the network talent to break away from the network feed. The local station may continue to air the program while the network breaks away. If the program is longer than 20 or 45 minutes, the network may reschedule it.
The phrase “breaking news” is used to describe the most significant story of the moment. In the case of an assassination, for example, the news may be a live event. Other news, however, may not be considered breaking news. A story may be considered breaking news if it has been reported several times by other news outlets.
In the case of an assassination, the breaking news may be a live report, with a reporter at the scene sharing more information as the event progresses. In the case of a major event, such as a terrorist attack, the breaking news may be a live shot of the anchor. The anchor may also remind viewers that the full story will be covered on the local station.
