Police in Washington say a man repeatedly rammed a Lyft carrying his partner. They have not indicated why the man was following the woman, who was a passenger, but say it appears to be a domestic violence-related assault. NBC News’ Liz Kreutz reports.

Breaking news is a term used to refer to breaking events that necessitate the interruption of non-news programming, or, in the case of network news broadcasts, a pause to allow affiliates to join the national feed. A countdown sequence precedes the announcement, along with a distinctive music cue and a specialized graphic overlay. The network may also change its lower thirds and other graphics to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news channels, these interruptions were usually reserved for extremely urgent stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Other examples include severe weather, which often requires station imaging promos and alert crawls during regular programming, or even more extended coverage such as a long-form storm warning.
