Breaking news is a type of broadcast journalism that provides the public with information about urgent, developing news events. It typically involves an interruption of current non-news programming on television or radio, with a news anchor introducing the breaking news and explaining its significance to viewers. Breaking news may also entail a special newsflash or special report, both of which are used to interrupt regular programming for news that requires immediate attention. In the days before 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was rare, except for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to interrupt their programming.
