Breaking news is a broadcasting event that requires an immediate, urgent coverage. Historically, such events have required an immediate interruption of current non-news programming (or, on a larger scale, regularly scheduled newscasts). The network will often alert its affiliates to expect an interruption in the schedule and ask them to “stand by.” If a national network is currently airing a live newscast at the time of the breaking event, the program will typically stop with a countdown sequence for affiliates to join the network feed and begin reporting the event. In some cases, a lower third or other graphics will be altered to convey a sense of urgency and immediacy.
