Breaking news is an announcement of a major, time-sensitive event which necessitates interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of network television and radio, their regularly scheduled newscasts. The breaking news is typically displayed on a special ticker and is often introduced with a distinctive music cue. In addition, a countdown sequence will usually be used to notify affiliated stations to interrupt their current programming and join the network feed for the special report. The term breaking news was once limited to severe weather events, such as tornado warnings and hurricane alerts, but has since extended to any story requiring immediate attention.
