Breaking news is a feature that allows television and radio stations to interrupt their regular non-news programming to broadcast live breaking news events. Typically, the network will alert its affiliates to stand by for an interruption (or a countdown sequence if a national network is involved), and a special graphic is displayed with a distinctive music cue to indicate that the station has paused for breaking news. This is common practice at 24-hour news networks, and is less frequent on conventional television and radio programs outside of major news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited widespread coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt programming.
