A breaking news story is a current event that requires a temporary interruption of regular programming to report on. The breaking news may be a major world event, or locally significant. It may also be a public safety emergency, or a severe weather situation. When a breaking news event occurs, the network will interrupt its non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) and display an alert crawl on screen, typically with a distinctive music cue. Some networks will also use special graphics on the lower third of the screen to convey urgency.
The disgraced financier’s legal troubles continue. He was arrested for alleged securities fraud, insider trading, and wire fraud. His wife says she was unaware of his crimes. He faces more than 40 years in prison.
