Historically, the news industry has been a profitable business. However, the advent of cable TV and streaming news services has one-upped the traditional news broadcaster. Streaming news has allowed viewers to view news content on the go, and setlight decades of kindling around the linear television.
Streaming news has also allowed networks to archive content. This is a big deal, because it reduces the cost of building a news library. It also makes video news ubiquitous. The news may last for days, or may be interrupted by commercial advertising.
A breaking news announcement is an event that interrupts a network’s coverage of an important story. A reporter at the location of a breaking event may share more information as the event progresses. Depending on the length of coverage, the network may have to reschedule programming.
The most impressive break in news coverage occurred in April 2017. A missile strike by the Shayrat air force in the Middle East interrupted a new episode of ABC’s Scandal.
A similar event occurred during the September 11 attacks. NBC’s coverage of the event featured a low-rated episode of The Blacklist: Redemption in the Central time zone. The story also included an internal alert service.
One of the first “breaking news” interruptions happened in 1963 when CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite covered the John F. Kennedy assassination.
Another example happened in 2011 when the network used a live shot of the anchor to announce the news. The network’s news anchor also reminded viewers that more details would be available on the local news.
