Current News is a term used to describe the news that is currently breaking or coming up on air. It can also be a more general term for any story of interest that has not yet been fully reported or documented.
Breaking News (also called a Special Report, Flash, or a News Flash)
In broadcast television, a breaking news event involves the interruption of a non-news broadcast in order to provide coverage of the story. The format of a breaking news program generally includes a brief countdown, with an opening graphic that introduces the story being followed and music to set a tone of urgency.
It also includes a news anchor that welcomes the viewer to the program and introduces the story at hand. The story may be introduced in a video or an audio file, as long as the content is relevant.
The anchor might remind viewers that more details are available on their local newscast or on the network’s evening or overnight news program if applicable. Depending on the time of day and the length of the breaking news event, this programming will be either joined in progress or started back up at the point of interruption.
The end of the news program normally includes a disclaimer for viewers who wish to find out more information about the breaking news, and usually features a short promo directing them to the network’s website or other platforms for further coverage. This type of ‘breaking news’ program has been known to have a significant impact on the ratings of the television station or news channel, and can often result in a station or news network being rated higher than its rivals for its reporting.
