Trending is a feature that allows for a quick and easy glance at the top stories of current news that are trending on various social media platforms. Oftentimes, this feature is used during breaking news events that may require a national network to interrupt regular programming. The network will usually send a countdown sequence to its affiliated stations, telling them to prepare for the interruption and requesting that they stand by for a live report. The network will then provide a full breaking news story, which may be overlaid with lower thirds and/or alert crawls. Historically, breaking news interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent or catastrophic events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
