When an event occurs that requires a live interruption of current non-news programming, or in some cases, regular network newscasts, a breaking news story is used. This type of interruption is usually accompanied by a newsflash graphic and often has its own distinct music cue. Breaking news coverage may be brief, or it can linger for hours or even days. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was typically reserved for very important events that required nationwide coverage and interrupted many stations at once. Examples include the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Challenger space shuttle disaster, and severe weather events.
