Trending is a term used to convey news that is popular among viewers. Unlike regular news reports, trending items are not reported by an anchor, but rather a series of short videos. They are often accompanied by a special lower third graphic. In the United States, this graphic is commonly referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report (also known as Breaking News). Prior to 24-hour news channels, breaking news events that required the interruption of non-news programming were usually announced by a special ticker that would appear on-screen during the program, sometimes overlaid with a station imaging promo or program reminder.
