When a breaking story occurs, the network newscast will usually interrupt regular programming to cover the event. Often, the broadcast will use a countdown sequence to allow network affiliate stations to switch over to the feed and begin their own coverage. Breaking news coverage has also been used during severe weather events, such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes. Before the rise of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were limited to major, national-level events that warranted a full interruption to non-news programming. Those breaks were commonly known as newsflash or special report, and were typically followed by a ticker displaying the most pressing information.
