A breaking news event is a story that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news or regularly scheduled programming on television, radio or online. Such events can range from a major natural disaster to the assassination of an international leader, and they typically require the network to inform its affiliated stations and ask them to break into their normal programming with a special report (also called a “Newsflash” or a “Special report”). Depending on the severity of the story, some networks will offer a live-breaking news feed overlaid on a regular network program, often accompanied by a distinctive music cue.
