For decades, TV news has been a cash cow for cable and broadcast broadcasters. However, a new crop of online video streaming operators are changing the way we cover the news.

Streaming news offers consumers a customizable experience. They can opt to watch local news, documentaries, and reruns. Streaming also allows viewers to access content when they want, wherever they happen to be.

Unlike television, streaming news is ubiquitous. A study found that over eighty percent of American households subscribe to at least one streaming service. This means that audiences are spending more time watching streaming content than they were watching broadcast programming.

There are some big names in the streaming space. CBS, NBC, and Fox are among the biggest news operators. These networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.

As you might imagine, the biggest challenge for these companies is avoiding over-hyping their product. Streaming executives have to be aware of long-standing cultural trends that have helped them become more competitive in the marketplace.

In the early days, cable news was a linear medium, and viewers had to wait to see what was on air. However, the advent of DVRs and web accessibility gave them an option to time shift.

Using the DVR allowed viewers to customize their own news experiences. Similarly, a news app like NewsBreak offered a personalized, localized news experience. The app is available on both iOS and Android devices. It is the most popular local news app in the country.
