Trending is the term used to describe a news event that is currently grabbing public attention. It usually involves a story that has a sudden and significant impact, such as an assassination or a severe weather event that is threatening large areas of the country. When a breaking news story occurs, the network usually interrupts regular programming (or in the case of 24-hour news channels, an ongoing live broadcast) and announces it with an opening graphic and music cue. Often, the network will provide analysis of the event as it develops through in-studio analysts or via phone, satellite or broadband. Network affiliates may also insert their station identification into the report over the top of the network feed. This is often referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”.
