It’s not hard to see why cable and streaming TV have dominated the news business for decades. Both offer the ability to customize and timeshift. And since viewers can watch on the go, it’s easier to provide a comprehensive and timely news package.

But before the internet was mainstream, the town crier was the only way to deliver current news. He would shout out the latest news as he walked the streets. However, he was limited by the location of his microphone and his sources of information.

Cable and streaming TV also offered news analysis. Streaming, though, allowed networks to archive and repurpose their programs for a global audience.

So when cable television was criticized for its lack of viewership, the cable and streaming TV business took advantage of the technology. They set up streaming operations and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in them.

For example, the Fox Nation app has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. These consumers are willing to pay for content, proving that viewers will subscribe to an online video streaming service.

Similarly, the free news streamers are trying to convince consumers that they can cut cable and still get cable-quality news. They are doing this by promoting cable-quality news.

Unlike cable, streaming doesn’t require costly negotiations with cable companies. That allows new overtly political news operations to enter the market. Streaming also offers the option of building a library of news content at a fraction of the cost of a cable news station.
