Trending is a feature that allows viewers to see what is currently being discussed on social media about the event or topic. It is often found on the left side of a television screen, and will also be shown in a banner or popup window.
Breaking news is a broadcast interruption in which non-news programming or regular scheduled newscasts are temporarily interrupted for breaking news stories that are of immediate concern. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were typically reserved for news events requiring national or international coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. These breaks are usually introduced with a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic, and may include a countdown to allow network affiliate stations to switch to the feed.
