Often referred to as “special report” or “breaking news”, a breaking news story is a live event or a story that has wide interest among viewers. Often, the news will last for only a few minutes.

A breaking news story is usually preceded by a brief announcement or a live shot of the anchor. An internal alert service may also be used to disseminate the information. The news may be passed to a reporter at the location of the breaking event.

The story may be brief, or it may last for hours. Networks may choose to re-air the story later. The length of time a story lasts is dependent on the news organization. However, the most significant news events may last days, even weeks. Often, a story will be reported and analyzed by a network, then passed back to the local station for a local report.

In the case of a local newscast, the breaking news may interrupt the newscast. The network may continue to show the live shot of the anchor, then cut to a video of the story. Local stations may also join the network’s feed at this point, and the newscast will likely resume at the end of the break.

Breaking news coverage on 24-hour news channels often focuses on the most important stories of the moment. It’s often followed by commentary. Networks may even suspend commercial advertising in order to cover a story. However, the station is careful not to relay stories during a play-by-play broadcast of professional or college sports.
