Cable TV news has long been a money maker. But the advent of streaming has set the ball rolling and may prove to be the next great shift in television coverage.
Streaming allows viewers to view stories anywhere. It also lets networks archive their content and provide timely delivery. By streamlining the media equation, streaming news has proven itself to be a viable competitor to broadcast.
Major cable and streaming networks such as Fox News, NBC News Now, and CBS have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their operations. They also schedule regular nightly news shows and offer documentaries, reruns, and news analysis. All of this has helped them attract a coveted mass audience. However, they also see their audiences evaporating.
Streaming has the potential to bring a new generation of overtly political news operations to the table. This could have the effect of feeding the polarization of the American audience.
In addition to the traditional partisan outlets such as CNN and MSNBC, new players are taking their cues from the streaming model. Several companies are trying to make a splash, including Fox Nation and One America News. Others are simply looking to capitalize on the $3 billion in profit that streaming networks will make in the coming year.
As these new players emerge, they’ll be able to shape the way political news is covered. And, with the help of online video streaming, they won’t be limited by expensive negotiations with cable companies.
