Breaking news is a term used by broadcast television and radio stations to indicate the breaking of an important story. Often, the breaking story will interrupt other non-news programs or regular newscasts; this is known as a cut-in. When this happens, a countdown sequence appears, and the network feed will pause, allowing affiliates to switch over to it. Then a news anchor will introduce the story.
