Historically, television news has been a profitable business. But financial pressures and a pandemic of mental health issues have created new levels of stress for higher education staff around the world.
This situation has created kindling for new players. The online video streaming industry has the potential to reshape political news coverage. Online video streams will not be bound by expensive negotiations with cable companies. This will enable new overtly political news operations to enter the market.
One of the major news networks, CBS News, is aggressively pursuing local streaming news. In 2022, CBS will beam 45,000 hours of local news content to streamers. This will be four times the number of hours of local news that they already beam to viewers.
A CBS-owned local station in Pittsburgh piped coverage of the collapse of a bridge to their streamers. CBS also picked up local coverage of the Sacramento shooting. This local coverage would have been preempted if the news had been on the national network.
The major streaming networks repurpose programming from the broadcast channel. They provide documentaries, news analysis, and reruns. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.
These networks are aiming to earn $3 billion in profit in 2020. The free news streamers would like to be a part of this success. Their model is similar to cable. Essentially, the free streamers are telling viewers they can cut their cable subscription and watch cable-quality news.
