Breaking news is the coverage of urgent, time-sensitive events that a station interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, even regularly scheduled network newscasts) to report on. The news event may be as simple as a severe weather warning, or it may require extensive nationwide coverage and an extended period of live interruptions. Often, the breaking news will be interrupted with a countdown sequence, to allow local affiliates to join a network feed, and a distinctive graphic and music cue. Increasingly, 24-hour news networks have used special tickers to break news stories during regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
