Current News is a category of television news programs that are typically relegated to late-night or prime time, and include breaking news stories. These programs may also cover news of the day in more detail, such as sports scores or weather.

Breaking news is a form of news coverage that interrupts non-news programming, usually a nationally broadcast network newscast, to report on a newsworthy event. It is characterized by an opening graphic, which may include music (as in the case of NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” or CNN’s “Sky Map”) that conveys the importance of the story being reported on.

The story may be followed for a few minutes, hours or days – (depending on the event being covered), and it can take place in real time. If it extends for a significant amount of time, the newscaster or station may integrate in-studio analysis about the event, via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN), or other means.

When breaking news coverage occurs on a nationally broadcast television program, it often includes a brief countdown or warning to allow all of the stations that are part of the same network to switch to the network feed. This is done by alerting all of the affiliates through an internal alert/message service.

When the newscast is over, the anchor may announce that more details will be coming in the near future on their local newscasts, and a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning news program if applicable. Alternatively, they may announce that more information can be found on the network’s website or other platforms.
