A breaking news report is a special newscast that interrupts a non-news broadcast, such as a regularly scheduled television or radio program, to provide coverage of an event with immediate or ongoing relevance. This type of news report typically begins with an alert crawl or a newsflash graphic indicating the urgency of the story, and sometimes includes a countdown for network affiliates to join the feed. Breaking news reports may last a few minutes or can continue for hours and days. Such reports are common on 24-hour news networks, but were uncommon before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and were often interrupted by news anchors in-studio with cut-ins during regular programming on conventional stations.
