Breaking news is current news that is of an urgent nature, such as a natural disaster or an unfolding crime story. It usually interrupts regular non-news programming and may also halt network newscasts if the event warrants it. If a national network is in the middle of an on-air newscast when breaking news occurs, the station will stop broadcasting and inform its affiliates to “stand by for a special report”. Often, a graphic with a distinctive music cue is used to indicate that the program is being interrupted. The special report can be a single segment or continue for hours or days.
